The Pakistan Cricket Board has denied offering a job of head coach to former captain Saleem Malik at the National Cricket Academy.
“He was not offered any position in the PCB setup,” PCB Director Cricket Operations Zakir Khan told reporters on Wednesday. The PCB official confirmed that the International Cricket Council had queried the appointment of Malik, less than two weeks after his life ban for match fixing was overturned by a court.
“We have exchanged e-mails with the ICC today and we have clearly told them that no appointment letter was issued to Malik,” Khan said.
Khan said he spoke with ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat after news of Malik’s comments reached him. “We have cleared the situation now. I can’t say anything on Malik’s behalf, but he was not offered any job,” Khan said.
Last month a court lifted a life ban imposed by the PCB on Malik for involvement in match-fixing, allowing him to resume his involvement in cricket. The PCB has said that it would not appeal the court ruling.
The PCB put a life ban on Malik’s involvement in the game after its own board of inquiry — beginning in 1999 and ending in 2000 — implicated him in fixing international matches.
“In 2000 the cricket board did a mistake by implementing the recommendations of Justice Malik Qayyum’s report,” PCB legal adviser Tafazzul Rizvi said.
“The board should have had referred Qayyum’s report to the federal government for proper action.”
Rizvi said the Qayyum report’s findings — in which several other Pakistani players including former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq, Wasim Akram and Mushtaq Ahmed were also fined — still stands.
“It’s a complicated issue and I don’t know who will now pursue the findings of Qayyum’s report, maybe the ICC,” Rizvi said.
The PCB’s denial of a Malik appointment could also mean the retention of former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif as the academy’s wicketkeeping coach. Latif had quit in protest at the Malik appointment.
“It is indeed shocking for me to know that former Pakistan captain Saleem Malik has been appointed as the head coach of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) national academy,” Latif wrote in his resignation letter sent to the PCB.
Khan said that the PCB has not received Latif’s resignation and it looked as a decision in haste.
“We have not yet received his resignation, but if he has quit, he took a hasty decision and should have clarified before quitting,” Khan said. Latif, 40, gave evidence to the Qayyum inquiry.
